Following Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Hornets organization found a home in the welcoming arms of Oklahoma City, OK. While the city’s beloved Saints returned after only one season away, the Hornets played in Oklahoma an additional year, stirring rumors of permanent relocation and abandonment. Compounding the situation were occasional comments from ownership, the head coach and players complimenting the fans an facilities of Oklahoma City as a great place to live, work, and play. Additionally, outstanding contract issues between the Hornets and the State of Louisiana had cynics expecting the worst. With New Orleans Arena renovations completed, Trumpet was tasked with announcing the return of the Hornets to New Orleans for the 2007 season. While this should have been a triumphant announcement, cynicism in a portion of the population of the city meant that messaging had to be carefully nuanced to avoid potential landmines. Opportunity for public opinion to slide toward the negative existed, and had to be managed carefully. Trumpet’s invitation to “Witness the Greatest Comeback in NBA History” struck the right chord, creating excitement among a basketball-hungry fan base and generating a sense of contribution on behalf of the Hornets to the recovery of the City of New Orleans. Early indications following connection with previous season ticket holders and potential new buyers are extremely positive.
